Mental Health Development
LGBT young people continue to grow up in a society where they face bullying, harassment and ostracism. 65% of young people interviewed for Stonewall’s School Report (2007) had experienced direct bullying in school, while 98% reported hearing homophobic language. These experiences and others mean that LGBT young people are vulnerable to developing issues around self-esteem, body image and relationships, which can lead to depression, isolation and other mental health problems including self-harming, eating disorders and suicide. Ensuring that young LGBT people receive appropriate mental health provision is essential.
The Consortium’s Mental Health Development Project aims to improve mental health provision for young LGBT people, by working with health professionals in the voluntary and public sectors. We provide:
We are also working with a Primary Care Trust (PCT), helping them to evaluate the mental health provision available for LGBT young people.
