Body Positive Cheshire & North Wales

Body Positive (200p)

Body Positive provides support for people with questions or issues around  sexual orientation, gender identity and sexual health.  The service outreaches to LGBT+ people across Cheshire at local events and has a specialist project working with LGBT+ people over 50 years of age: Silver Rainbows. Our one-to-one sessions give people the social and practical tools to be resilient to prejudice based on sexual orientation or gender identity and help them to make informed choices about how they can best manage their sexual wellbeing. Outreach takes the service to people who would normally not be given the opportunity to access services because of lack of knowledge, low perceived susceptibility to core health and wellbeing issues and mental health issues, and those who may have lost hope in being accepted as they are, such as older LGBT+ people who have experience a life-time of stigma. Our free counselling service gives service users the opportunity to access therapy that helps them come to terms with their identity and find support for others such as friends and family who are just as involved in the struggle of acceptance: to be proud of themselves and their significant others. Our Silver Rainbows programme has provided and continues to provide special events for older LGBT+ people, their families, carers and allies including country walking, tea dances, social groups (“Tea and Tattle”), archive and reminisance project and lead to the formation of the Proud Mary’s LGBT+ Choir based in Chester. We run LGBT+ social groups, social media and news distribution to allow LGBT+ people in Cheshire to feel connected and give them an oasis where they can meet similar people and feel a sense of belonging that can help them when they might otherwise feel isolated with their sexuality or gender identity.
