The Campaign for Homosexual Equality is a voluntary organisation working to change the attitudes and laws that make life difficult for homosexual and bisexual people in England and Wales. CHE was formed in 1969. As the Committee for Homosexual Equality, CHE became a national organisation and attracted support from many leading figures in the medical profession and the arts, together with some from the Church. In 1971 CHE changed its name to the Campaign for Homosexual Equality, and over the next few years it grew to have a membership of over 6,000 with more than 100 local groups in all parts of England and Wales. Today CHE is only a fraction of its former size but still carries on the work begun nearly forty years ago. The aims of CHE are: To promote the principle that homosexual and bisexual people are entitled to lead their lives openly without fear. To fight for social and legal equality and respect for the human rights of all people irrespective of their sexuality. To eradicate prejudice and hostility directed at homosexual and bisexual people. To campaign for improved sex education in schools to eliminate existing negative attitudes to homosexuals and bisexuals.
