Gaysians

Gaysians (200p)

INVISIBILITY EXISTS Asians have lived in the UK for generations, yet we lack appropriate media representation. By extension and due to negative views of homosexuality within the Asian community itself, LGBT+ individuals and community are barely present in mainstream, Asian, LGBT+ media or pop culture. The Asian community demands greater representation. Not just as doctors, lawyers or engineers, but as authentically represented individuals, reflective of our community as a whole. We are here to increase visibility and drive positive representation of Asian LGBT+ people.

INVISIBILITY ENABLES PREJUDICE Only through access to the stories of Asian LGBT+ people can compassion grow and prejudice be challenged. We are daughters, sons, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles and neighbours. Only by meeting, understanding and getting to know Asian LGBT+ people can embedded religious and cultural prejudice be challenged and overcome.

INVISIBILITY KILLS Often, when Asian LGBT+ individuals come out to their families, they are disowned and therefore access to community, religion, language, and a rich culture are also lost. They can become isolated, and when they look to the LGBT+ community, they find themselves unrepresented and often encounter racism. The foundations of their identity are stolen as they reconcile with their sexuality and they face the threat and reality of murder (honour killings), forced marriages, abduction, conversion rape, and if left to their isolation; depression, self-harm and suicide.

Gaysians’ is here to provide positive representation of Asian LGBT+ people. We are not invisible and we are not alone. We are a community; here to reclaim our inherited identities (religious, traditional, cultural) and celebrate these as part of our British Asian and LGBT+ identities.

OUR AIMS CONNECT different organisations and people to create a safe space for our community to discover resources and build friendships. We are an umbrella group that helps people navigate services and organisations that already exist and those that are yet to be created.

EMPOWER individuals and the community to live authentic lives without the fear of prejudice, by challenging issues affecting the Asian LGBT+ individual and community.

CELEBRATE the positive stories that exist within the community across all backgrounds, increasing positive visibility.
