LGBT Resilience: Our Top Tips

#LGBTResilience

We understand that running an LGBT organisation takes a lot of effort and messages come in thick and fast about our need to respond to this and respond to that. With that in mind, we thought it would be helpful to provide Members with some initial practical hints and tips to help them in their everyday work to keep their organisation flourishing.

Take a little time

We know that time is precious but do yourselves a favour and set some aside to really think about where your organisation is, where it’s going and what you need to do to get it there.

Stop and Evaluate

If you have written 50 funding bids and not been successful – stop! Think about who you are applying to and what you are applying for. Reading who and what trusts and foundations fund (top tip – check the previously funded pages) might be time consuming but it will prevent you from spending hours, nay days, writing funding bids that aren’t suitable. Don’t forget that Members can use our LGBT Funder Finder and our Engagement Team is ready and willing to help!

Be focussed

Develop or update your Organisation's vision and mission. Get your trustees, staff and volunteers together and agree/update what the Organsiation's vision and mission should be, simple statements will do. Once your focus is clear, the way to acheive it should be clearer too. Organisations with mission drift are rarely truly effective. Check out our new resource on Vision & Mission here.

Plan

We all love it when a plan comes together, but it won’t if you don’t have one. Planning, both in terms of work and finance are essential for a healthy organisation and prevent funding gaps, the loss of staff and ultimately the closure of more groups and services.

Get Good People, use them and keep them

A good board of trustees is essential to any organisation – but many organisations still aren’t using their board effectively. Start by recruiting trustees who bring skills, experience and connections as well as just enthusiasm (although this is super important too!) and then utilise them, develop them and cherish them!
Check out our resources on Trustees and effective meetings here

Mix things up

Relying on just one source of income is risky these days. Once you have done steps 1, 2 and 3 take some more time to really look at different ways of generating income for your organisation – what assets does it have and how can you optimise a return from them? Check out our resource on Diversifying Income here
