Amazing Response to the Gender Recognition Act Consultation

Wednesday, October 31, 2018 - 11:00

Thank you to all our Members who responded to the Gender Recognition Act consultation, who helped disseminate our/others positive messages and who engaged local people with the importance of responding. The consultation has now closed but the GEO was so overwhelmed with people trying to respond on the last day that they had to extend it for a further weekend.

This extension certainly proved positive and popular from our perspective with the number of people clicking through to the GEO or Stonewall forms from our links jumping up several thousand clicks in just two days!
Though the consultation is now closed, this is just the beginning. The GEO will be analysing the responses over the Winter but we shouldn’t rest on our laurels as there is likely a tough road ahead. The negative press and attacks from certain so-called feminist organisations was shocking (although not unexpected). It highlights so bluntly how much work there is still to do for trans people and communities and we all have to stand firm together and keep the message going that ultimately trans women are women and trans men are men.
We will continue to work closely with our Members, our Trans Organisations Network and the GEO to keep this high on the agenda and ensure the reforms that are so badly needed make it to the floor of Parliament and ultimately into the Statute Books. We will also keep a close eye on what is happening in Scotland and liaise with our Members there as they progress ahead of Westminster.
Thank you again to everyone and let’s not stop now!
