Bisexual and Trans People come together in the North

Wednesday, October 4, 2017 - 10:45

BiTastic! is an annual Scottish event designed by and for bisexual and trans people that will be held in Nairn on 28th October. The event, run this year by LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex) organisations the Equality Network, Scottish Trans Alliance and Stonewall Scotland, provides a unique opportunity for bisexual and trans people and their family and friends to meet each other and talk about the issues that are important to them.

The programme for the day covers diverse topics from sex and relationships to mental health, and sessions that are focused on just having a little fun with like-minded people. There will also be some workshops focused on the needs of young, disabled and minority ethnic people who are bisexual and/or trans. Workshops will be facilitated by a variety of voluntary sector organisations and community members.

The event will also include staffed information stalls from a range of voluntary sector organisations that work with LGBTI people including disability and women’s organisations.

Tim Hopkins, Director of the Equality Network said: “We know from research that bisexual and trans people are often at risk of poorer health outcomes and face specific barriers in accessing support. Events created especially for bi and trans people are very much needed to combat isolation, which is one of the main reasons why these poorer outcomes exist, but such events are rare. We are very proud of our BiTastic! events which are specifically designed to raise awareness of these issues and provide spaces that combat such isolation.”

Sophie Bridger from Stonewall Scotland said “We are delighted to be involved in providing a much needed space for bisexual and trans people to come together. The needs and experiences of bi and trans people can be overlooked in both mainstream and LGBT spaces. This event will give people the opportunity to build their confidence to make their voices heard, to meet allies and to realise they are not alone.”

James Morton, Manager of the Scottish Trans Alliance is also looking forward to the event; “Historically, trans and bisexual people have often come together to support each other and we are excited to be involved in this important event in Nairn. Lots of people in the Highlands have told us they are really looking forward to taking part. We know from the Equality Network’s Further Out work just how vital it is to hold events in rural areas where there is less LGBTI visibility.”

The full BiTastic! programme and free tickets are available on the BiTastic! website: BSL interpretation is available if requested before 11 October.
