Over £25,000 raised at City for LGBT+ event

Tuesday, May 28, 2019 - 10:00

We were very pleased to come together with GiveOut and The Funding Network last week for City for LGBT+ - a new crowdfunding event to mark IDAHOTB (International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia)

The event supported four inspiring organisations who are driving positive change for LGBT+ individuals and communities, in the UK and internationally.

After a welcoming speech from Geff Parsons of Macquarie Group, we listened to a fireside chat between Iain Anderson and Lord Browne, author of The Glass Closet - a book about being gay and coming out in the corporate world. The audience was inspired by Lord Browne's personal, funny and honest take on the importance of being accepted for who you are and on challenging bigotry wherever you find it  - both in life and in business.

Two Consortium Members then pitched for funds:

Megan Keys, a Trustee of Gendered Intelligence, gave the first pitch, talking about GI's work to increase understanding of gender diversity and to improve the lives of young trans people in the UK via their school-based mentoring scheme.

The next pitch was from Victoria Docherty from New Family Social, on their work supporting adoption and fostering for LGBT+ couples and families in the UK, and and the value of creating fun family memories through their summer camps. Four children from the group took to the stage to state their favourite things about camp.

Glenroy Murray from J-FLAG gave a hopeful pitch about the rise in positive public attitudes towards LGBT+ people in Jamaica. They also discussed the need for a new building to provide a base for Jamaica's LGBT+ groups, following a fire at J-FLAG's old home.

To close the pitches, Jayna Kothari from The Centre for Law & Policy Research (CLPR), discussed their work across India providing legal representation to trans people to ensure equality and justice. The crowd was moved by their legal successes in overturning discriminatory laws.

Together, we raised over £25,000 for these four special organisations. See photos from the night here.

A warm thank you to Macquarie Group - winner of the Pink News Business Equality Award 2018 - for hosting us for the evening, and to all who attended and gave so generously on the night.
