GiveOut and J-FLAG, Jamaica’s leading LGBTQI human rights organisation, are fundraising in the UK to re-establish 'Rainbow House', the office space and LGBTQI community hub in Kingston, Jamaica that was destroyed by fire at the end of 2018.

“We have received an outpouring of support from the LGBTQI community globally, our allies, partners and donors, offering condolences and asking how they can help.” said Jaevion Nelson, Executive Director of J-FLAG.

“What we really need at this difficult time is financial support. We are delighted to be partnering with GiveOut to fundraise in the UK.”

Jamaica has been described as the “most homophobic place on Earth”, with J-FLAG receiving more than 250 reports of human rights violations against LGBTQI Jamaicans between 2011 and 2017. Notwithstanding this, attitudes are changing as a result of the work of J-FLAG and others, and the country celebrated its fourth annual Pride festival last year.

Rainbow House was the operational base for the first Pride celebrations in Jamaica, with many of the early Pride events hosted there. The space became a hub for LGBTQI community organising and was

home to J-FLAG and its partner organisations, including WE-Change (for LBT women), TransWave (for trans and gender non-conforming persons) and Equality Youth (for LGBTQI youth and allies).

On 30 December 2018, Rainbow House was destroyed by fire. While the space itself was rented,

J-FLAG and the other groups lost equipment, computers, files, supplies, furniture and other essential resources for their work. They are counting on the LGBTQI community globally to help them with the costs of re-establishing the hub.

“When we heard that Rainbow House had been destroyed, we wanted to do everything we could to help, especially since TransWave, a partner organisation of J-FLAG, is one of our grant partners,” said Rupert Abbott, GiveOut’s Executive Director.

“We will be fundraising in the UK, enabling our community and allies here to give in solidarity to support the LGBTQI community in Jamaica."
