Inquiry into Health and Social Care in LGBT Communities

Friday, August 3, 2018 - 08:00

The Women and Equalities Select Committee (WESC) has today launched an inquiry to consider whether provision of health and social care for LGBT people and communities is adequate, whether discrimination is still occurring, and what more needs to be done to improve access to health and social care.

The committee's inquiry will look into the following issues:

  • Understanding and addressing LGBT health inequalities
  • Meeting the need of LGBT people in health and social care
  • Discrimination in health and social care
  • Exploring the role of the proposed new National Adviser for LGBT healthcare

Maria Miller, Chair of the WESC said, "Evidence suggests that the healthcare needs of LGBT people are not currently being met effectively, some report that they still face discrimination in health and social care, and there are inequalities in outcomes between LGBT groups and the wider population. We welcome the Government’s recently announced Action Plan and its commitment to ensuring that LGBT people’s needs are at the heart of the NHS. This is therefore a crucial time for us to look at how services can best be provided and improved for LGBT patients. We want to hear from organisations, individuals, researchers and service providers about what can be done to make health and social services more effective for LGBT people."

The Committee is encouraging LGBT organisations to collate the views of their clients and users and respond with a submission. The deadline for submissions is the 5th October 2018 and more information about the inquiry can be found here.
