Wednesday, October 21, 2015 - 14:00

Stonewall Housing has been funded by the Forced Marriage Unit to produce a new online resource that gives advice to lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans* (LGBT) people who are at risk of forced marriage.

Stonewall Housing aims to improve the lives of LGBT people by providing housing advice, advocacy, safe accommodation and support.  The new project will meet the growing need of young LGBT people who are threatened with forced marriage or honour based violence.

Maria Sookias – Coordinator for LGBT Domestic Abuse Forum said: “We want to highlighting the experience of LGBT  people including migrants, refugees, asylum seeks and those with no recourse  to public funds at risk of forced marriage by placing their experience in a global context of homophobia, biphobia and transphobia and help dispel myths that those new to the UK are responsible for the housing crisis”.

Stonewall Housing will be creating an online resource that will be written in six languages and focus on how to finding accommodation and advice on staying safe.

The resource will also provide a practical steps that will help break s down a barriers to accessing services in two different ways: by providing information to those who may not have links to LGBT support groups or survivor groups; providing information to those who are in need of legal housing advice and who are unable to approach mainstream services due to fear of outing them selves and increasing risk.

Suki Thiara- Forced Marriage and honour based violence officer for Stonewall Housing said: “We are inviting LGBT people with who have experienced of threats of  forced marriage and/or ‘honour’ based violence to make contact with us and talk to us in confidence about what should be included. We want to ensure that our resource is useful and specific to non English speaking communities to prevent more LGBT people being forced into situations that they have no control over”.
