LGBT Schools Project Partnership Announced

Thursday, September 8, 2016 - 20:30

We are delighted to announce that following a successful application to the Government Equalities Office / Department for Education's anti Homophobic, Biphobic and Transphobic Bullying Fund, LGBT Consortium will be leading a partnership of 12 Members to deliver an innovative project over the next 2 and a half years. The project will work with schools across England, in conjunction with young LGBT people, to help school staff understand and tackle HBT bullying and provide more supportive school environments so every young L, G, B and T person can feel safe whilst undertaking their education.

Our partnership will be one of 6 LGBT specfiic projects working together to tackle these important issues and will introduce innovative new ideas like a helpline for school staff so they can receive support at times of need and from people with expert knowledge. For example, should a school need some support or information around trans specific issues we can put them in touch quickly with experts such as Mermaids. We will also be looking at bullying from a pan-equality perspective so all young LGBT people, whether they are (e.g.) disabled, BAME or of a particular faith can feel actively included in their school environment.

Paul Roberts, Chief Executive at LGBT Consortium said, "This is an amazing project, not only through its ability to tackle very important issues around bullying to make all schools safe space for young LGBT people, but also through its partnership model. We have brought together some of the leading expert organisations within the LGBT youth field into one partnership that can tackle these issues head on together so we can have even greater imapct for long term change. We are incredibly grateful to the Department for Education and the Government Equalities Office for this opportunity and look forward to working with the other funded projects to make the biggest difference we can collectively."

The LGBT Schools Project Partnership is one of 6 LGBT specific funded projects under this scheme and Consortium is delighted that some our other Members were also successful and look forward to working with The Proud Trust, SexYouality, Allsorts Youth Project, METRO and Stonewall.

Our primary delivery partners in the project are:

METRO, Yorkshire MESMAC, ELOP, Mosaic LGBT Youth Group, Space Youth Project, Proud2B CIC, Yay LGBTQ Youth Cornwall, North East LGBT Federation, Schools Out UK, Mermaids, Free2Be Alliance, 2BU Somerset.

Our secondary partners, who will help us be even more inclusive and support our School Staff Support Line and our pan-equality work are:

New Family Social, GIRES, Three Faiths Forum, Bi-UK
