National Hate Crime Awareness Week 2016

Monday, October 10, 2016 - 09:45

Set up in 2009, National Hate Crime Awareness Week takes place between the 2nd and 3rd Saturday in October here in the UK. The week hosts events and projects which aim to raise awareness of hate crime and provide guidance and support to victims on how they can report it.

We will be bringing you news from the Members of the National Hate Crime Network all week, click for more stories and resources.

Teresa May spoke about National Hate Crime Awareness Week saying “We have one of the strongest legislative frameworks in the world continuing to protect communities from hostility, violence, homophobia and bigotry but we need to do more.”

This follows on from The Government's recently published Hate Crime Action Plan which included plans to fund new projects which will work with schools to equip teachers and parents to challenge hatred and give them the know-how to report it. LGBT Consortium has been sucessful in securing some of this funding and will be leading a consortium of 12 partners to deliver an LGBT Anti-Bullying Project. More details about that will be released in the coming months.

This new project follows on from extensive work from 31 Partners led by LGBT Consortium to tackle Hate Crime in 2015/16. The work focused on increasing the reporting of Hate Crime across the England, Wales and Scotland (funded by the Equality and Human Rights Commission), some of the resources from that project can be seen here.
