National Lesbian and Bisexual Women’s Health Week 2017: Sexual and Reproductive Health

Friday, March 17, 2017 - 10:15

This week is the first National Lesbian and Bisexual Women’s Health Week.

Coordinated by the National LGB&T Partnership, an alliance of LGBT charities including LGBT Consortium, the week aims to address health inequalities and recognise some of the great work that is taking place around the country.

The Week focusses on 4 key themes, each day we explore one and today we are looking at lesbian and bisexual women's sexual and reproductive health

Whilst up-to-date research is desperately needed, existing research indicates that women who have sex with women experience barriers to accessing sexual health services, have negative experiences when they do and find it difficult to find information that is relevant to them. Evidence has shown that:

Almost 60% of lesbian and bisexual women say that it’s hard to find information about sexual health that is relevant to them

In 2012 40% of women with exclusively female partners received a diagnosis when attending a GUM or sexual health clinic, compared to 18% of women who have sex with men. This figure only represents women who recently had exclusively female partners and disclosed this information to clinic staff

51% of lesbian and bisexual women of an eligible age had either never had a cervical screening test or not had one within the recommended timescales

37% of women questioned had been told they did not require a test due to their sexual orientation, resulting in over half disengaging from screening programmes, believing they were not at risk
