New LGBTQI+ Project Launches across London and Greater Manchester

Monday, June 10, 2019 - 15:30

Rainbow Mind is a brand new project led by Mind in the City, Hackney and Waltham Forest and Mind in Salford, aiming to tackle mental health issues specifically for individuals within the LGBTQI+ community across both London and Greater Manchester.

At a time when LGBTQI+ issues have never been more in the spotlight, and with a disparity between the number of LGBTQI+ individuals experiencing mental ill health and the rest of the population (the average is 1 in 4 people in any given year, but in the LGBTQI+ community can reach levels as high as 70%), Rainbow Mind hopes to address this growing need for support in key areas of the UK.

The project hopes to champion mental health within the community through work such as their upcoming randomised controlled trial (RCT) on their newly developed training. This training has been put together by experienced practitioners, and is called Radical Self-Care (RadSec). The training teaches self-care and mindfulness skills to deal with some of the unique mental health needs and experiences of LGBTQI+ individuals.

The project is a collaborative one, with the two Mind organisations working alongside City University in London and the LGBT Foundation, and is mainly led, staffed and directed by LGBTQI+ people.

The project is hosting a launch week from the 17th– 21st of June, with their launch event in London on Wednesday the 19th of June, which will feature talks from people such as the Mayor of Hackney Philip Glanville, as well as panel discussions, activities, and the opportunity to find out more about the project and its trial. This event will be from 6pm – 8:30pm and will be hosted at 15A Homerton Row, London, E9 6ED.
