No 10 Celebrate Equal Marriage

Thursday, July 25, 2013 - 11:15
The Prime Minister hosted an LGBT reception at Number 10 Downing Street yesterday to celebrate the passing of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013. There were around 150 invited from across a variety of voluntary organisations, businesses and within the world of politics. Our own CEO and Chair of Trustees were both in attendance and used the opportunity to network with a range of people, including many of our Members.

Paul Roberts, Consortium's CEO said, "It was wonderful to spend a couple of hours in the gardens of Number 10 to celebrate such a historic piece of legislation for England and Wales. We must remember though that the fight isn't over now this is passed. There are other parts of the UK that still don't have equal marriage and we have to support them in gaining this equality. Scotland is well on its way with this journey, but Northern Ireland is some way behind and we must work with organisations there to help push things forward. We also need to recognise not every section of our community will be receiving equality--trans people are not being treated equally through this legislation and we have to right these wrongs."

Paul also said, "One of our other observations at the end was the lack of representation of bisexual and trans people at the event, which was quite disappointing. There were just a handful of people representing these important parts of our sector and given the part many played in the fight for equal marriage it would have been nice to see more represented."

The Prime Minister did make reference to the importance of tackling issues such as homophobic bullying and we have also had a response from one of the equality ministers that they agree there are more things that need to be achieved for our communities. We will be holding them to account on this as time develops!
