Organisational Health Check

When was the last time you gave your group a health check?

Here at LGBT Consortium we think it's really important to make sure that your group or organisation stays healthy and fit for purpose, so every month we will be focusing on a different element of running a group, such as; structure, governance, funding, planning etc...

Each month we will bring together a range of tools  written resources  and videos  to help you review your current practices and to plan for the future.

Hate Crime

This month, to tie in neatly with National Hate Crime Awareness Week, we thought we would share a huge range of useful resources and tools that can help your group to work with LGBT Hate Crime issues.

These resources and tools we created by 35 LGBT Consortium Members through the EHRC funded Hate Crime Partnership and it is with thanks to them that we can share the benefits of their wealth of Knowledge, skills and expertise with you all.

Impact

This month our Organisational Health Check is taking a break to make way for our Impact Survey, which you can complete [here]

The data we collect from this survey is used to create our annual Impact Report which explores the work of our Members and of LGBT Consortium. The reports contain information and useful snap shot stats that all of our Members can use as evidence for funding bids or research.

Our 3 previous Impact Reports can be found [here] - please feel free to use them as you see useful.

Getting the support you need

There would be no point in us encouraging our Members to take stock of their groups and organisation if we weren't prepared to support them in making the changes or improvements they may need to make.
So for this months Health Check we are asking Members to get a little more familiar with all of their Membership benefits.

Here are some of the things that Members can so, access or refresh for their LGBT Group:

  • Book a 1:1 phone appointment with the Engagement Team here
  • Use our research and reports as evidence in funding bids
  • Check that your Directory entry is up to date here
  • Find new trustees, volunteers and staff through our 'Work in the Sector' pages here
  • Check out a range of resrouces here

Social Media

Having a good online presence is important for so many reasons, not least because it gives more avenues for people to engage with your group or organisation. Social Media has become such on important tool, especially for community & voluntary organisations, because it is free to use and fairly straightforward to set up, compared with a website.

We have brought together a range of resources and tools to help you get the most out of your Social Media presence.

Don't forget that your friendly Engagement Team can offer you support around volunteering, or any aspect of running your group. Get in touch by emailing: admin@lgbtconsortium.org.uk

We have lots of resources and tools for you all around recruiting, developing and retaining volunteers. We also brought a few of our Members together to share their top tips and thoughts about volunteering, which you will find scattered through the resources below.

Managing Risk

Don’t leave it to chance, and don’t leave it too late!

Here at LGBT Consortium we always encourage our Members to operate using best practice. That means having the appropriate insurance, that you manage risk well (no matter what size group you are) and that your Trustees fully understand their roles, responsibilities and legal liabilities.

If you are unsure about any of this then get in touch with the Engagement Team who can offer you support. Don’t forget that our monthly ebulletin often has information about changes to charity legislation and best practice, meaning all the information you need is delivered direct to you.

April

Planning, Planning, Planning!

This month take some time to explore and reflect on how your organisation plans – and if it doesn’t then take some time to look at the benefits of starting to. In an idea world where funding is easily obtainable and capacity is something we have more of, we would have all the necessary plans in place for all the eventualities we might face… but since it isn’t and we don’t, we are going to stick to two areas of planning that we feel are a must for any voluntary or community organsiation.

Planning & Running Effective Meetings

Ever sat through a meeting for hours only to come away thinking, what was the point in that or did we actually achieve anything? If you have, don’t despair, not all meetings have to be a chore; a properly organised meeting can be quick, concise and productive, leaving you with a sense of achievement and feeling motivated.

Meetings are an essential part of running a community/voluntary group, regardless of its size, legal structure or whether it has staff. So this month we are inviting our Members to take some time to reflect on how they plan and conduct their meetings - and what they can do to make them more productive (and interesting!).
